Zion Judah returns to the music scene in stellar fashion after a three year hiatus, with his self-produced single, “Higher Consciousness”, and a soon to be released sophomore album,”Quest”, on his grassroots label, Mt. Zion Records. “Divine Creation”, Zion's first album, released in 2004, was a fine freshman effort, which was promoted almost exclusively via the Internet and gained him substantial worldwide exposure. The album is still one of the top ten requested albums on RadiodirectX of Toronto, Canada, to date.
For those who are just becoming familiar with this talented indie artist, who has been performing since the late nineties, ZJ is a formidable singer-songwriter/producer whose style has been best described as, “deep, innovative and Bob Marleyesque." - The Village Voice. He possesses a distinct vocal delivery that ranges from smooth and soulful, to Jr. Gong-like chanting with tempered intensity. Inherent in his sound, is a an infectiously pervasive, utopian rasta vibe that abounds with incisive, conscious lyrics and poignant themes, which he conveys as a wicked musical roots tonic for those ready to ingest its potency. Zion Judah (b. Angelo Damian Singh) bears a multi-ethnic, West Indian background, and hails from the twin island republic of Trinidad & Tobago. He grew up listening to anything that moved him he says - “roots reggae, dancehall, kaiso and soca, blues, funk, Rnb, rock, pop, classical, African drumming, East Indian music and then some.” He was also a music video junkie since the early eighties, but in his parents' opinion, which was law, music was a pipe dream, and thus not encouraged in any serious way, but that didn't deter him. By age nineteen he flew the coop and headed for the US to find his musical self. “Zee”, as he is called by friends, isn't just your average, creative cat. He graduated Summa Cum Laude from The City University of New York, with a BS in Economics/Business and a minor in Geography, and is pursuing a Master's degree in Environmental Policy. “One ought to develop both the left and right brain...explore one's full potential...to realize one's purpose,” he says with confidence. Since 1992 he has called NYC home away from home, and when he isn't making music, he's either spending quality time with his family, studying, or just absorbing lots of underground content in order to stay sharp.
